Star School Policy Initiative

PTM's School Policy Initiative helps Maine schools create and maintain 100% tobacco-free campuses. These tobacco-free schools provide model environments for their school districts and communities.

This Initiative takes an important step in raising awareness about secondhand smoke:

Exposure to secondhand smoke is the third leading cause of preventable death in America.
In Maine seven people die from tobacco use every day, one being a nonsmoker exposed to secondhand smoke.

The Environmental Protection Agency has classified secondhand smoke as a "Group A" carcinogen - the most dangerous category of cancer—causing agents.

Children exposed to secondhand smoke have an increased risk of contracting serious respiratory-tract infections and asthma.

A manual is available for school administrators interested in developing tobacco-free policies. Click here to download your copy of Creating and Maintaining a Tobacco-Free School Policy.
