Places, Spaces and Automobiles
Tobacco-Free Places, Spaces and Automobiles
focuses on making these six environments 100% tobacco-free:
homes, vehicles, bars, workplaces, schools, and playing
fields. For each environment, the program offers easy-to-use
materials, ranging from pledge cards to manuals on how
make your designated space tobacco-free.
The program, created by the Partnership
For A Tobacco-Free Maine, makes an impact by:
- Raising public awareness about the dangers of secondhand smoke.
- Bringing the issue right down to the community level.
- Allowing for universal involvement among home and car owners; employers and employees; principals, school employees, students and parents. People can work independently or together to create tobacco-free zones.
The program was established to address
these alarming facts about secondhand smoke.
- Exposure to secondhand smoke is the third leading cause of preventable death in America.
- In Maine seven people die from tobacco use every day, one being a nonsmoker exposed to secondhand smoke.
- The Environmental Protection Agency has classified secondhand smoke as a Group A carcinogen — the most dangerous category of cancer-causing agents.
- Children exposed to secondhand smoke have an increased risk of contracting serious respiratory-tract infections and asthma.
