PTM's
Good Work! Program improves on an aspect of Maine
State law. Although Maine requires employers to develop
a workplace policy that protects their employees from
secondhand smoke, the Good Work! program goes further,
helping employers make their workplaces 100% tobacco-free.
Participating employers receive
a manual explaining why a 100% tobacco-free workplace
creates a safer and more productive workplace. This
manual takes employers through the steps necessary
to create and maintain such a workplace policy.
Good Work! was established in response
to the dangers of secondhand smoke:
Exposure to secondhand smoke is the third leading cause of preventable death in America.
In Maine seven people die from tobacco use every day, one being a nonsmoker exposed to secondhand smoke.
The Environmental Protection Agency has classified secondhand smoke as a Group A carcinogen — the most dangerous category of cancer-causing agents.
